To anyone living in the Buffalo NY or Harrisburg/Liverpool PA areas...you can get an early dose of what's in store for AROTR from us...and...The Pete Best Band! We are doing a show tonight with Pete & the boys at The Tralf Music Hall, and again on Sun May 18 at Liverpool PA's 200th (you say it's your) Birthday Celebration. If you live in either of these areas, we'd love to see ya!

I spoke with Pete's manager yesterday, and she exclaimed high enthusiasm for AROTR from Pete, Roag, Phil, Paul & Tony. They are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

Katie - South Euclid, OH, United States May 9, 2008 10:23am
I agree with RD about Geoff Emerick, the man is amzing. I had the good fortune of hearing him speak at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to an intimate group of people just after his book came out. The stories he told about how he interacted with the boys, with respect to recording them was truly fascinating. If anyone hasn't read it I would highly recommend buying or borrowing a copy of his book "Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles". No Protools in those days folks, a music engineer had to be creative and the talent of the artists had to be real!

I can't wait to see all of you at the festival. Come say hi if you're going to be at the Oh Darling! singing contest. I'll be there!

I would like to see 2 Johns and one Paul perform the vocals to IF I FELL. If I understand this correctly, are there not 2 different vocal tracks of John on that song? Or did I just dream this?

RD - Lou. Ky., United States May 8, 2008 6:33pm
Geoff Emerick was one of many unsung heroes in the studio that helped bring The Beatle magic to records. He innovated many miking techniques that broke the traditional approach, and are still used today.

Rob from Cincinnati - Cincinnati, OH, United States May 8, 2008 6:08pm
Hi Sue:
Thanks for the info. It's pretty amazing what the Beatles and their studio crew were able to come up with using fairly simple (by todays standards) tools. Wikipedia has an interesting write-up on double tracking.

I tend to attribute all of the studio brillance of the Beatles to George Martin. However, I guess there were others (like the guy you mention, Ken Townsend)who made significant contributions.

See you soon.

Jim Ringo Martin - Chicago, United Kingdom May 8, 2008 5:39pm
Right on Sue! I believe I read somewhere that the Beatles (and George Martin)were influenced by Leslie Gore, of all people, who was an early "doubletracker". I believe John Lennon often preferred his vocals double tracked, expressing he felt his voice too weak (HA!). And regarding "live" double tracking, John and Paul do it all the time, just listen to "I want to Hold your Hand", "She Loves you", Thank You Girl, From Me to you, to name a few, where they double track until they split off in harmony. So it would be kinda cool to have two Lennons double tracking live, as long as their egos don't get in the way. Looking forward to seeing all of you in 2 weeks, especially you "costumed crazies", as I'm hosting the contest during the All Starr show. Peace and Love.

I can't wait for Abbey Road! Two questions, when will a map be posted of the Festival area and how do I become an AROTR myspace friend?

sue from pittsburgh - pittsburgh, United States May 8, 2008 8:25am
Hey Rob. Just a quick lesson on double tracking. ( I know this stuff because my husband is a musician)First of all, double tracking was a very big part of the "Beatle sound". It was achieved by the vocalist singing the same part twice and played back together. The singer actually needed to hear the first vocal very clearly in order to match it as closely as possible. Because it is impossible to duplicate the first vocal exactly, the result was a much "thicker sound". Because doing this became tedious for John, Ken Townsend, a member of the Abbey Road tech staff, invented automatic double tracking. This was done by playing the vocal through a tape machine with the tape head altered to effect the resulting second vocal. This was used heavily on Revolver. Being a purest, my husband said he always prefered the real thing. That is why I thought if two Lennon guys sang the same lead vocal, it would simulate the double traked sound. Hope that helped.

Hi. Looking forward to my first AROTR. Also looking forward to the costume contest which I plan to dress up for.
See you all in a couple of weeks

Rob from Cincinnati - Cincinnati, OH, United States May 7, 2008 5:44pm
Hi Sue:

I think the double tracking idea would be tough to pull off.

I did a Google Search (which qualifies me as an expert).

Apparently, to get double tracking during recording, you have to have two takes of the same thing and then play them back together. This will always result in subtle differences which is where the "fatness" in sound comes from during double tracking.

You could "fake it" real time, by running a single vocal feed through a procesor that is able to slightly alter the pitch and add a bit of delay while running the unprocessed vocal through another channel at the same time.

Another way to do this live might be to pre-record the vocal track and play it back while the same singer sings the same song again. To make it work right, the singer should probably not be able to hear the recorded track (otherwise they would probably unconsiously adjust and sing the song the same way which would eliminate the effect). This could be done by having the singer wear earphones and not send the recorded vocal track back to him through his monitors.

To make it work with two people live, the two people would need to sound very much alike and sing the song very much the same way. During the performance, they would probably have to be prevented from hearing the other guy. Otherwise, they are going to adjust to each other and that would ruin the effect and you would just get two guys singing together. This might be fun to try if you can find the right singers.

Sue,
Excellent idea, no surprise I'd be there for sure!!!!

sue from pittsburgh - pittsburgh,pa, United States May 7, 2008 7:48am
Hey for any John Lennon singers out there- I have an idea ( my husband Dave from the Elliotts even liked it). You know how The Beatles would double track the vocals on their recordings? Wouldn't it be cool to get 2 or 3 of the best Lennon sound-alikes on stage together for a song or two - this could be a way to get the double-track effect live! Any comments?

Office - Louisville, Kentucky, United States May 5, 2008 8:30am
Today's Daily Repetition:

Reserved Tickets and Ultimate Tickets are the same.

I will be allowed to see every show if I have a 1 day, 2 day, 3 day, 4 day, or 5 day ticket called reserved or ultimate.

So, will my 21 and under guests.

I am secure in this, and will refrain from calling or writing the AROTR office today.

FAQS

Question: I just received my tix. I am not sure how they work. I ordered the 5 day tix but only received 1 ticket. Do I receive 5 wrist bands when I turn the ticket into the box office.
Answer 5 day Ultimate Ticket To Ride passholders, also known as 5 day reserved received 1 Red reserved ticket attached to a purple 5 day ticket. Therefore , these ticket holders, only have to check in once, and when they do, they will receive one 5 day wristband. All other multiple day ticket pass holders must check in each day when they arrive.

Question: There is nothing on the ticket or papers you sent me to indicate that I requested a free 21-and-under ticket. Will my daughter get one for sure? AnswerIf you purchased a ticket before May 18, you will receive, or have received a hard copy ticket that states on the back of the ticket, that it includes a comaparble free 21 and under ticket. That’s all you need. A ticket and a guest!

Question: I purchased a 5 day Ultimate ticket to ride ticket and I was wondering if the 21 and under ticket holder would be able to get into all of the same shows because the ticket says "reserved admission." Answer A reserved ticket and an Ultimate ticket are the exact same ticket. Consider Ultimate a nickname for Reserved. 21 and Under guests receive the same ticket as the people bringing them.

Question: I'm arriving on Friday morning, and my 21 and under guest won't be on site until very late Friday evening. Do I just have her call me to meet her at the ticket check when she arrives? Answer You must be together. The primary ticket holder must accompany the secondary free ticket holder

Question: My neighbor, purchased a 3-day Ultimate ticket with a free 21-and-under ticket for her young guest, but can't arrive until late Friday evening. My daughter, and I want to arrive by early afternoon Friday, and the other girl wants to ride with us so she can get there earlier, too. Is there a way the other girl can get her free ticket (wrist band) earlier in the day when we arrive so she can attend concerts, or does she have to wait until our neighbor arrives Friday night. Answer You must be together. The primary ticket holder must accompany the secondary free ticket holder, but remember, if the Free ticket person is coming a day earlier, he or she should bring the primary ticket, then meet up with the other person, the next day.

Question: I purchased a 5-day Ultimate Ticket with a free 21-and-under ticket, but I will only be able to attend Friday, Sat., and Sunday. Although the 3 day is only $10 cheaper, can I get a refund for the difference when I arrive? The 3-day Ultimate gets us into all the concerts, right? I can use that $10 for something else! Answer Sorry, but tickets have been mailed and refunds are not available,

Question: I would like to attend the Love Concert on Friday, May 23,2008. I can get in free for everything else, but do you have to buy tickets for the friday night concert, and if so, what kind of tickets? The concert says reserved-hotel, but how and where do I buy tickets for this? Answer Any reserved concert can be purchased separately by General Admission pass holders. This can be done by clicking the general admission link, then first purchase a general admission ticket, then select the Reserved show of your choice and purchase it.

Question: How do we get a 2 day ticket for general admission for 2 on Saturday & Sunday? Answer All tickets are available on our web site; click tickets above, or by calling 216.378.1980

Question: Trying to find a decently priced hotel room (that has availability around this venue) for Saturday (5/24) - Monday (5/26) for 2 nights for 2 adults (me and my wife). Answer In addition to rooms at The Galt, all nights besides Saturday, we have rooms at the Fairfield Inn, The Days Inn, and The Executive Inn . Links for all of them are on the ticket pages.

Katie - South Euclid, OH, United States May 4, 2008 11:24pm

Janine Garner - NC, United States May 4, 2008 9:35pm
Hey everyone! As I'm sure you all know by now, we are having a costume party on Saturday night at the midnight show. Details can be seen here: Costume Party

Also, I'm wondering if any of you are planning on dressing up in costume?? Please pipe up with a hearty "yes" if you are. I only ask because there is a GREAT prize for the winner of the costume contest (see here...Rocky Guitar.

Yup, that's a replica of George's "Rocky Guitar."

To enter into the contest, just show up at the midnight concert and enjoy Jim "Ringo" Martin and his all star band at some point between midnight and midnight thirty. The judges will be wandering around (they'll be introduced as the judges at midnight, so you know who they are, and make sure they see your costume), and at 1245, the winners will be announced (1st-3rd place, most creative, best portrayal of a song title, and "Best in show" wins the rocky guitar).

Hope to see you all in costume!

Ok a new event in my neighborhood has caused me to dispell this rumor that may be running amuck. Unlike the "band" that has tried to practice near me recently I must confirm that British Export, Peter Conrad, All You Need Is Love, Johnny Doughnut, Vinyl Kings and Steve Sizemore all tune their instrument. Yes I hate to break this news to everyone but it is true. Remembering this is a kid friendly event you may need to have a talk with them before a lawn show. Can't wait and if it's not obvious we really need a break. Love to you all

Anyway, just received my AROTR Ultimate Ticket. Question: The packet says that I can pick up my Free 21 and under ticket at the box office upon proof of age. Can you tell me what will be needed as PROOF of age? Are we talking birth certificate here?

Hope to see lots of our old friends and meet up with some new ones. Come and say hi to me and Maiya. We will be hanging out with our band "The Cryers". I will be manning their table selling T-shirts and CDs . . . Hmmm, now HOW did I get roped into this?? LOL!

Forgot to mention the times...
Eight Days a Week: May 3, 6 - 10 PM

The aquarium at Newport on the Levy is also quite excellent (one of the best in the US I'm told). Definitely check out the live shark tank show if you go to the aquarium.

The concerts are outside and free.

Also, DEFINITELY check out the band that is playing there the next day (Sunday, May 4). They are a Steely Dan tribute band called, AJA/ They've got horns, back-up singers, the works.

At least three of the members of AJA are in another Cincinnati-based band playing at AROTR. Their Beatles tribute band is called, Savoy Truffle and they are excellent. Definitely check them out both as AJA and at AROTR as Savoy Truffle.
